"Creating Large, Working Small"
2 day workshop with Marianne Haak

Discover the advantages of Quilt-As-You-Go and Design-As-You Go.Quilting an 18" block as opposed to a large quilt, has some real advantages. The obvious one being everything fits under the machine during quilting, resulting in less frustration and wear and tear on your joints and muscles. Marianne's design process is very improvisational. In this workshop, the techniques you will learn are; Quilt-As-You-Go construction with wide and narrow joining strips, wonky log cabin block, spiral quilting using a walking foot, and getting unity in your quilt designs. Yes, "Quilt-As-You-Go" has been around for a while but Marianne has revitalized and modernized it! You choose to make either the Wonky Log Cabin or the Curved design.

Time: Set up 8:50am, classes begin at 9:00am - 3:15pm
Cost:$115.00 for members, $130.00 for non-members

Creating Large, Working Small

Harrison Hot Springs Fall Retreat

Date: October 16, 17, 18 and 19, 2015

Registration for our annual retreat will be at the April meeting. Last year the third night was so successful we will be again offering either two or three nights at Harrison.

Two nights: October 16 and 17 and includes dinner Friday and Saturday and breakfast Saturday and Sunday. Total price is $385.

Three nights: October 16, 17 and 18 and includes the meals that are in the two night package and coffee on Monday morning. Total price is $485.

All three night participants need to be rooming with another 3 night participants. So if you have a preferred roommate please make sure you are both planning to stay the same length of time. If you do not have a preferred roommate we will try and match you up.

In an effort to simplify a number of things for the guild Cathy and I will be using a joint bank account to manage the Harrison money. This keeps the funds out of guild accounts. So that means cheques are to be made payable to either Cathy Galbraith or Lynne Fanthorpe. One cheque will be for $50 dated April 8, 2015 this is a non refundable deposit. The remaining cheque for either $335.00 or $435.00 is to be dated September 1, 2015. Cathy and I will have two people that attend Harrison review the financial activity following the retreat just so that everyone is comfortable with the process. An audit so to speak. The guild treasurer will also be asked to review the process.

If you have any questions please contact me.

Past Retreats

Harrison Retreat October 17 – 20, 2014

Harrison Retreat October 18 – 20, 2013

Registration for our annual retreat was at the May meetings.

You will need to write two cheques; the first dated May 14, 2013 for $50. This is a non-refundable deposit. The second for $330 dated August 31, 2013. This covers the room, breakfast Saturday and Sunday, and dinner Friday and Saturday.

This year we also have the option of staying Sunday night and having the sewing room until 3 pm on Monday. There will be no meals provided and the cost will be an extra $105.00. This option is only available if we have 16 people staying the extra night. This will be based on double occupancy so we may have to do some roommate juggling to make this work. If you are interested, a third cheque will be required.

If you have any questions please contact me.

Harrison Retreat October 12 - 14, 2012

Our retreat is now history. We had a last minute cancellation so only 29 of us attended this year. This was our tenth year at Harrison and the hotel surprised us with cake and coffee on Friday afternoon. I had been planning to make a small quilt for the hotel to celebrate the anniversary, so by Sunday we completed a quilt with 3 leaves in wonderful autumn colours. Judy Leslie and I had worked out the colours. I made the top and Judy quilted and bound the quilt. Everyone signed the back and it was presented to hotel staff on Sunday morning. They were surprised and thrilled. Throughout the weekend, we discovered that leaves are in the decor at Harrison, so perhaps next year, we will see 3 more leaves at the resort.

Our theme was “back to basics” and we got lots of quilting done. Quilts were completed, more started, and as a result, very tired quilters. By Sunday afternoon we reluctantly started for home, thinking about next year. If you have never been to a retreat , you should try it; it is fun!

The cost was $380 paid as follows: First cheque for $50, which is non-refundable, dated April 10, 2012. Second cheque for $330, dated September 1, 2012. We will accept both cheques in April. Registration began on April 10, 2012.

Harrison Retreat October 14 - 16, 2011

31 stitchin' witches met for a fun filled 3 days at Harrison Hot Springs. We collected over 30 blocks of cats, ghosts, and pumpkins. Donna Mae volunteered to put them all together – hopefully there will enough for three cuddle quilts for Canuck Place. Thank you Donna Mae!

Val and Cher got us to think outside the box regarding gel pens. Thanks ladies!

Becky taught us the 10 minute block - we're expecting more than a few preemie quilts using this technique. Thanks Beckie!

We also managed to fill two pillows with scraps for the homeless. Merla and I have had a blast co-chairing this event for the past couple of years. Time to turn it over to others members. The retreat is booked for the next two years – October 12 – 14, 2012 and October 12 – 14, 2013.

The new co-chairs are Lynne Fanthorpe and Cathy Galbraith. Thank you both for stepping up!

Thanks to all who attended, sharing your skills, donating door prizes, and most of all bringing your smiles and friendship.

Thank you ,
Daisy and Merla

Harrison Retreat October 15 - 17, 2010

Twenty-six of us attended "Santa's Quilt shop" Oct 15 - 17, 2010. We made thirty-four children’s Christmas pillowcases and twenty-two quilted Christmas ornaments to give to Ronald McDonald House and Canuck Place.

We all had a wonderful time! The weather was great, the camaraderie was wonderful, the food was excellent, the door prizes plentiful, and the hot tubs relaxing!

Thanks to our "demo" ladies - Tricia Brown for her pillowcase techniques, Nancy Chan for her magic binding, Sandi Bajcar for her 3-D Christmas tree and patterns, and Mary Shore's impromptu demo on how to measure ends of binding so it fits perfectly. Everyone was so generous with their time and knowledge. A special thank you to all who attended - you really made our first attempt a very rewarding experience.

Thanks,
Merla and Daisy
